Analyze a Track Free →What Is Tunebat?
Tunebat is a web-based tool that lets you look up the musical key and BPM of songs available on Spotify. It works by connecting to your Spotify account and searching a database of published tracks. You search by song title or artist, and it returns the key and tempo data that Spotify has stored for that track.
The limitation is fundamental: Tunebat only knows about songs that are on Spotify. If you need the key or BPM for an unreleased track, a sample, a DJ edit, a stem, or any file that does not exist on Spotify, Tunebat cannot help. BeatKey was built precisely for this gap.
The Core Difference
Tunebat
Searches a Spotify database. Requires a Spotify login. Only works for published songs. Does not analyze audio.
BeatKey
Analyzes the actual audio file you upload. No Spotify account. Works for any file. All processing runs locally in your browser.
What BeatKey Offers (For Free)
Upload any audio file (MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AAC) and BeatKey analyzes the actual audio in your browser. No database lookup, no Spotify required.
Key Detection
Detects musical key in all 24 major and minor keys by analyzing your audio directly.
BPM Detection
Accurate tempo analysis with beat timeline visualization from your uploaded file.
Camelot Code
Instant Camelot notation (e.g., 8A for Am) for harmonic mixing. Tunebat does not show Camelot codes.
Chord Detection
Chord Finder detects the full chord progression from your audio. Goes far beyond key and BPM.
Delay Calculator
Calculate BPM-synced delay times for plugins and mixers. Unique to the BeatKey suite.
No Account Needed
No Spotify, no login, no email. Drop a file, get results. Your audio never leaves your device.

When BeatKey Is the Better Choice
Unreleased tracks and demos
Tunebat only knows about songs on Spotify. If your track is unreleased, a demo, or a remix, BeatKey can analyze it. Upload the file and get the key and BPM instantly.
Samples and loops
Producers working with sample packs, vinyl rips, or custom loops need audio analysis, not a database lookup. BeatKey processes the actual audio to find key and BPM for any sample.
DJ prep for exclusive edits
DJ edits, bootlegs, and acapellas are not on Spotify. BeatKey gives you the Camelot code for any file, making harmonic mixing prep possible even for tracks Tunebat cannot find.
Privacy-first analysis
BeatKey runs entirely in your browser. Your audio files never leave your device. Tunebat requires a Spotify login, creating an account link to your music activity. BeatKey requires nothing.
The BeatKey Tools Suite
BeatKey is more than just a key detector. It is a growing suite of free music production tools, all browser-based, all free:
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a free alternative to Tunebat?
Yes. BeatKey is a completely free, browser-based tool that analyzes any audio file to detect musical key and BPM. No Spotify account or login required. It also shows Camelot codes and detects chord progressions via Chord Finder.
Why does Tunebat not work for my track?
Tunebat only knows about songs listed on Spotify. If your track is unreleased, a remix, a sample, a stem, or otherwise not on Spotify, Tunebat cannot analyze it. BeatKey analyzes the actual audio file you upload, so it works for any track regardless of whether it is published anywhere.
How accurate is BeatKey compared to Tunebat?
BeatKey uses Essentia, an open-source audio analysis library developed by the Music Technology Group at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. It analyzes the actual audio waveform for key and tempo. Tunebat retrieves metadata from Spotify, which can sometimes be inaccurate because Spotify uses its own detection pipeline. Neither tool is 100% accurate on all tracks, but BeatKey analyzes what you actually have rather than a database entry.
Can I use BeatKey for DJ library prep?
BeatKey analyzes one track at a time in your browser. For bulk library tagging and integration with DJ software like Serato or rekordbox, Mixed In Key or rekordbox are purpose-built for that workflow. BeatKey is best for quick individual track analysis, unreleased music, and situations where no Spotify lookup is possible.
